A couple of days ago GMail rolled out certain dynamism in its labels. Now have control over which of your labels show. These labels can be considered as folders which categorize your mails. It automatically shows the labels you use most and hides the rest. I just saw the same in my Google Apps configured account.

Gmail filters allow you to manage the flow of incoming messages. Using filters, you can automatically label, archive, delete, star, or forward your mail, even keep it out of Spam -- all based on a combination of keywords, sender, recipients, and more.
You can now drag messages into labels, just like you can with folders. This does the exact same thing as "Move to" -- it labels and archives in one step.

Label hiding is cool, since it saves me from having to look through labels you don’t use.
You just need to drag them to the downward position to the more link and they are disappeared there. If you ever need to reach any of the old labels, just click the "more" link. It saves your hell lot of time to go to settings and blah-blah...
If you haven’t created labels as yet Click Create New label on the top under heading settings. You may also reach here from the right bar of your Gmail window.
